shakuntla dushyant love story… that gave birth to our nation
All of us have heard the love story of Dushyant and Shakuntla, but not many of us know they have connection with our country getting named BHARAT. The story starts with Shakuntala, the love child of great sage Vishwamitra and Apsara Meneka, who was renounced immediately after her birth by both her parents in the forest.
Protecting the newborn were a group of birds named Shakunt, Kanva Rishi saw the baby and brought her along to his ashram and named her Shakuntala. Shakuntala was brought up in the ashram itself. She was very beautiful and looked like her mother Meneka.
One day the King of Hastinapur Dushyant came to the forest for hunting and visited Kanav rishi’s ashram to meet him. As Kanva rishi was out on a pilgrimage, Shakuntla asked him to come some other time. Shakuntla gave her introduction to the king that she is the adopted daughter of Kanva rishi.
On seeing Shakuntala, King Dushyant was besotted by her beauty and fell in love with her. Shakuntala was also impressed by the king. When the king proposed marriage to her, she accepted and both had a Gandharva vivah in the forest.
After marriage, King Dushyant stayed in the ashram with Shakuntala for some time. But due to the responsibility of his kingdom, he had to return to the palace. He promised Shakuntala that when Kanva Rishi returned, he would come and take her to the palace. As a token of love, he gave Shakuntala a gold ring and returned to Hastinapur.
One day rishi Durvasa stops at her hut for hospitality, Shakuntala, lost in her love thoughts, fails to hear his calls. The temperamental sage turns back and curses her: “He whose thoughts have engrossed you would not remember you anymore.”. On the plea of her companions, the enraged sage relented and added a condition to his curse-statement that He will only recall her upon producing some significant souvenir.
